Star Wars: A Terrible Movie
Many lists of Great Movies include Star Wars (I mean the first
one, released in the late 1970's). As a movie, it's not too bad, but when you
consider the influence it had on the movie industry, it should properly
be placed in a Worst Movies list. Some reasons:
- It marked the beginning of the end of personal film-making in the mainstream
of Hollywood, replaced by kid/teen-orientated action pap.
- It marked the introduction of merchandising led film-making, where
entire scenes seem included only for their later conversion into
computer games.
- It showed film-makers that sfx sells better than characterisation.
A process that will lead to entire movies full of Jar Jar Binks'
.
- It showed film-makers that originality could be replaced by random
borrowing from b-movies, serials, and pop-culture. A process
that continues today with movies based on computer games, comics, etc.
